Crown Prince Launches Construction of Africa's Largest Seawater Desalination Plant

Since assuming the throne, His Majesty King Mohammed VI has steadfastly advocated for policies aimed at mitigating environmental challenges. Following the overarching goals of the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program 2020-2027, the Casablanca desalination project aims to enhance water accessibility and security, boasting an estimated annual production capacity of 300 million cubic meters.
Envisaged to serve approximately 7.5 million inhabitants across Greater Casablanca and adjacent regions, this project is emblematic of Morocco's proactive approach toward ensuring water resilience for future generations.
With an investment totaling 6.5 billion dirhams, the project is slated to unfold in two phases across a 50-hectare expanse, underscoring a collaborative partnership between public and private sectors. The initial phase, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, targets a daily output of 548,000 cubic meters of treated water, with provisions for expansion to 822,000 cubic meters per day by mid-2028. Notably, a significant portion of the augmented capacity will be reserved for agricultural use, thereby bolstering agricultural productivity and reinforcing food security initiatives.
Integral to the project's goals is the incorporation of renewable energy sources, ensuring sustainability and aligning with Morocco's overarching commitment to carbon neutrality and green energy adoption. Moreover, rigorous quality control measures will be enforced to uphold the highest standards of water purity and safety, for public health and environmental integrity.
Beyond its immediate impact on water availability, the Casablanca desalination plant reflects Morocco's unwavering resolve to confront environmental challenges head-on. Through innovation and collaboration, this initiative not only promises to secure a prosperous and sustainable future for Moroccan citizens but also sets a precedent for regional leadership in the realm of water resource management.
