The country's diverse landscapes and ambient lighting make it a magnet for production companies seeking ideal filming locations. From captivating series to blockbuster films, Morocco serves as a backdrop for a myriad of cinematic creations, captivating audiences worldwide with its breathtaking scenery and unparalleled ambiance.
Internationally Renowned Films
Inception (2010), Gladiator (2000), Babel (2006), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and The Man Who Knew Too Much (1995) are just a few examples of films shot in Morocco. Martin Scorsese utilized Morocco's biblical settings for his film The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), while Ridley Scott recreated ancient Rome in Gladiator (2000) and Egypt in Alain Chabat's Mission Cléopatre (2002). The country's kasbahs and desert landscapes served as the backdrop for the fictional kingdom of Westeros in the Game of Thrones series and will continue to be featured in the upcoming House of Dragon series, set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
The Marrakech International Film Festival
The Marrakech International Film Festival stands as one of the most exquisite cinematic and cultural events. It serves as a platform to honor and celebrate individuals and actors who have significantly contributed to the global film industry. Established in 2001 by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the festival is a testament to inclusivity, showcasing uncensored films, hosting masterclasses, paying tributes, and highlighting the finest works of Moroccan cinema. Moreover, it places a special emphasis on nurturing young talents through the "Cinécoles" competition, which recognizes the best short films crafted by students.
Celebrations
Several Moroccan events and celebrations take place across the country's cities. These cultural and religious events, which perfectly symbolize Moroccan traditions, occur during the renowned Moussems and festivals. Don't miss the Tan-Tan festival, listed as part of the cultural and intangible heritage of humanity since 2008, or other notable events such as the Cherry Festival in Sefrou, the Moussem of Roses in Kalâat M'gouna, or the Gnaoua festival in Essaouira.
