FM Nasser Bourita Shares Insights With French Magazine "Le Point” on Morocco's Strategic Initiatives and Emerging Regional Challenges
Minister Bourita emphasized the progressive nature of Morocco's foreign policy, particularly under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. He highlighted the Royal Initiative for the Atlantic, which seeks to strengthen ties between Morocco and Sahel countries by providing access to Moroccan ports, storage facilities, and logistical infrastructure. Minister Bourita described this initiative as a means to free the Sahel from isolation, grounded in an Afro-optimistic perspective that rejects viewing Sahel countries as doomed.
Addressing the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, Minister Bourita underscored the growing global recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the territory. He highlighted that, driven by the dynamic initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this recognition has been reinforced by the opening of approximately thirty consulates in Laâyoune and Dakhla, along with increasing support for the Kingdom's autonomy plan as a viable resolution to the dispute. He noted that nearly 20 of the 27 EU member states now endorse this approach, signaling a significant shift in international dynamics.
Minister Bourita also stated that over 112 countries currently support Morocco's autonomy initiative, with notable endorsements from the United States and a majority of African nations.
Marking a new chapter in Morocco-France relations, as advocated by His Majesty, the Moroccan official emphasized the significance of French President Emmanuel Macron's recent state visit. This visit resulted in the signing of a pivotal declaration aimed at strengthening the bilateral partnership. He noted that France’s position on the Moroccan Sahara aligns with a broader recognition of Moroccan sovereignty, framing the future of the territory within this context, as articulated in the letter from President Macron to His Majesty the King last July. He clarified that this acknowledgment from France—a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a key player in the EU—is viewed as a crucial development in international support for Morocco’s position, coming from a country that understands the realities of the region.
Addressing the Palestinian cause, Minister Bourita reaffirmed Morocco's commitment to this issue, describing it as an equal priority alongside the Sahara question. He emphasized that Morocco consistently supports initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace and recognizing the rights of the Palestinian people, advocating for a two-state solution without resorting to extreme measures.
Regarding migration, the Minister discussed the complexities of the issue, rejecting the notion that any single country should bear the full burden. He underlined the Royal Vision as a model of shared responsibility, emphasizing that only through genuine coordination and mutual commitment among all stakeholders can meaningful progress be made in addressing migration challenges.
