Film Tindouf Camps
A new film titled “Les Évadés de Tindouf,” or the “The Escapees of Tindouf” directed by Abdelhak Najib will be released on November 6, 2024. The long-feature film produced by Orion Productions delves deep into the ongoing conflict surrounding the Moroccan Western Sahara conflict, specifically through the lens of the Tindouf camps in Algeria, where thousands of innocents find themselves trapped in what can only be described as a prison under the open sky.

The film tells the harrowing story of five men and two women who embark on a desperate escape from the Tindouf camps just seven days before the 50th anniversary of the Green March—an event rich with national significance and historical weight. Armed only with a small bag, a Quran, some water, dates, and a radio, the group sets out to traverse the unforgiving desert landscape that lies between Algeria and Moroccan Sahara.

As the camera follows their perilous journey, it captures the stark reality of the fugitives moving silently across sand dunes, navigating the vast emptiness without a compass or map. Under the cover of night, they hide by day to evade patrols and bandits.

As time passes in the harsh Sahara, the group struggles against relentless sun, solitude, and the creeping threats of starvation and fatigue. They confront not only physical challenges but also their mental limits. “This escape is a pilgrimage,” Najib reflects, as each character grapples with their identity and seeks hope amid despair.

The story unfolds through a diverse cast—Driss, Mohamed, Mariam, Fatema, Brahim—each scarred from over 23 years in brutal captivity. They are resilient souls driven by love for their homeland, willing to risk everything for freedom.

The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Driss Roukhe, Mohamed Choubi, Kamal Haimoud, and many others, who bring these extraordinary characters to life, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit against overwhelming odds.
