Morocco and the U.S. Launch Twinning Agreements to Foster Decentralized Cooperation
The delegation’s visit began in Rabat, where they were received by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. During this meeting, Ginther praised HM King Mohammed VI for his visionary leadership in urban development, particularly in the Moroccan southern provinces. “The wisdom of His Majesty to concentrate on the development of cities throughout Morocco, especially in the Sahara, is exemplary,” Ginther noted, emphasizing the progress achieved under the HM’s guidance.
Ginther stressed the importance of local cooperation in strengthening U.S.-Morocco relations, referring to Morocco as “America's oldest friend.” He underscored that fostering collaboration between local governments is essential for effectively addressing shared challenges.
Jim Ross, Mayor of Arlington, Texas, echoed Ginther’s sentiments, highlighting that the delegation’s visit aims to nurture the longstanding relationship between the United States and Morocco. “These relationships give us an opportunity to be better together,” Ross remarked, encapsulating the core values of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
The American delegation also engaged with members of the Moroccan Association of Mayors (AMPCC) to learn about Morocco's achievements in local governance and sustainable development.
Following their meetings in Rabat, the visiting delegation traveled to the southern provinces of Morocco to sign twinning agreements between Dakhla and Columbus, Ohio and the Communal Council of Laayoune and the City of Arlington, Texas.
The signing ceremony in Dakhla was attended by local dignitaries, including Erragheb Hormatallah, President of Dakhla’s Municipal Council, and Ali Khalil, Wali of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region. On this occasion, Ginther expressed his enthusiasm about visiting Dakhla for the first time and emphasized that the agreement would offer an opportunity to exchange best practices in culture and sustainable development.
In the city of Laayoune, the twinning agreement was signed by Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid, President of the Communal Council, and Mayor Jim Ross. This agreement aims to bolster bilateral cooperation across several areas of common interest, including economic, educational, and cultural exchanges. Ross expressed his admiration for Laayoune's infrastructure and underscored the importance of mutual benefits from this partnership.
