Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, reaffirming Morocco’s commitment to the recently adopted "Future Charter," aimed at revitalizing multilateralism to promote peace, equitable development, and inclusivity.

Mr. Akhannouch emphasized the urgent need to prioritize peace, stability, and development in global efforts, stressing the importance of adopting a holistic approach rooted in trust, dialogue, and mutual respect. He highlighted the significance of international cooperation in tackling complex global challenges.

The Moroccan official identified the current global landscape, fraught with intricate challenges, as a unique opportunity for nations to reaffirm their dedication to the UN Charter. He called for renewed political will to pursue collaborative solutions that are both equitable and legitimate, asserting that the need for inclusive, cooperative action has never been more pressing.

Prime Minister Akhannouch referenced a call from His Majesty King Mohammed VI during the annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, emphasizing that recent socio-economic and political developments necessitate reforms in the institutions and frameworks governing the multilateral system. He reiterated that renewed multilateral action requires genuine political will to act collectively and pursue inclusive solutions grounded in equity and solidarity.

The Prime Minister placed significant emphasis on Africa, advocating for the continent to be central to the UN's agenda. He accentuated the importance of transforming the challenges facing Africa into opportunities for sustainable development. This perspective reflects Morocco’s recognition of Africa’s potential and the importance of cooperative strategies that yield mutual benefits.

Addressing the critical issue of climate change, Akhannouch revealed Morocco's ambitious target: to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45.5% by 2030. He outlined plans to increase investments in renewable energy, including green hydrogen, aiming for over 52% of the country's electricity mix to derive from clean energy sources by that same year. In this context, he noted that Morocco is committed not only to addressing environmental challenges but also to fostering sustainable economic growth.

In addition to environmental initiatives, the Moroccan official highlighted the kingdom's progress in social protection, food sovereignty, and health enhancement. He emphasized that these efforts reflect the commitment to improving the quality of life for Morocco’s citizens and building a resilient socio-economic framework.

The Future Summit, part of the general debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, brought together heads of state and government, as well as representatives from international organizations and civil society. During this event, UN member states adopted the "Future Pact," which includes commitments to reduce the digital divide and accelerate the achievement of sustainable development goals.
