Ship-Signals Agreement (1787)

The Ship-Signals Agreement Treaty negotiated between the United States and His Majesty Sultan Mohammed Ben Abdellah from January 1st to January 25th, 1787, stands as a cornerstone of peace and friendship. Facilitated by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson as Ministers Plenipotentiary, this treaty delineates crucial provisions regarding commerce, maritime affairs, and diplomatic relations between the two nations. It ensures mutual safeguarding of vessels, non-interference during wartime, and equitable treatment for citizens and their possessions. Moreover, the treaty delineates the functions of consuls, mechanisms for dispute resolution, and the duration of its validity. Additional declarations appended to the treaty further fortify protections for American vessels in Moroccan ports.
