US Consular presence in Morocco (1797)
In 1797, a significant milestone marked the beginning of bilateral relations between the United States and Morocco with the appointment of James Simpson as the first U.S. consul to Morocco. Entrusted with this historic duty, Mr. Simpson embarked on his mission to Tangier, a prominent diplomatic hub in the region, where he initiated the establishment of consular operations. His appointment underscored America's commitment to fostering diplomatic ties not only with Morocco but also with the wider North African region. As the inaugural representative of American interests in Morocco, Mr. Simpson played a pivotal role in facilitating communication, trade, and cultural exchanges between the two nations, thereby laying a sturdy foundation for a lasting partnership built on mutual respect and cooperation.
