Visit of His Majesty King Hassan II to the United States (1978)
In November 1978, against the backdrop of global geopolitical shifts and emerging challenges, President Jimmy Carter hosted His Majesty Hassan II, King of Morocco, for a state visit to Washington. This visit, facilitated by President Carter's invitation, served as a pivotal moment in U.S.-Moroccan relations, embodying the spirit of friendship and mutual cooperation between the two nations. Amid discussions with President Carter, Secretary of State Cyrus Vance, and other American officials, the leaders addressed a wide array of bilateral and international issues.
Recognizing the enduring ties between the United States and Morocco, they emphasized the harmonious development of their centuries-old relationship, particularly in areas such as cultural, scientific, and technical cooperation. Notably, the leaders underscored the importance of energy resource development, signaling mutual interest in exploring new avenues for collaboration in shale oil extraction and renewable energy utilization. Additionally, agreements were reached to bolster academic exchanges and facilitate private sector involvement in Morocco's socio-economic development.
In their dialogue on international affairs, President Carter and His Majesty King Hassan II reiterated their commitment to principles of national independence, territorial integrity, and peaceful resolution of conflicts, with a particular focus on African and Middle Eastern issues. The visit culminated in a shared vision for promoting stability and cooperation regionally and globally. As a testament to the strengthened bonds between the two nations, President Carter accepted His Majesty's invitation to visit Morocco, further solidifying the enduring partnership between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco. This historic visit epitomized the collaborative efforts of both leaders to advance mutual interests and contribute to global peace and prosperity during a pivotal period in history.
