Visit by a US Delegation of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy to Morocco
This visit, which included the cities of Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Dakhla and Essaouira, provided the American delegation with an opportunity to learn about the major projects undertaken in Morocco in various fields such as tourism, logistics, renewable energy, fisheries, and agriculture, as well as to explore the investment opportunities existing in Morocco.
In Rabat, the US delegation held talks with Foreign Minister, Mr. Nasser Bourita and the Minister for Energy Transition, Mrs Leila Benali. On this occasion, Satloff hailed Morocco’s position on the international stage. “Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to peace and security,” he said. Praising the Kingdom’s proactive diplomatic efforts, Mr. Satloff equally stressed that Morocco plays a vital role in the Arab region and African Continent, displaying an ever-growing influence.
The WINEP Director seized the occasion to underline the deep and historical ties between Morocco and the United States, which have been built on common interests and shared values for more than two centuries. Satloff also highlighted the importance of Morocco’s cultural diversity. “Morocco’s cultural diversity is a major asset that should be hailed and followed as a model for the world. We have much to learn from the Moroccan approach to interfaith dialogue and peace promotion,” he noted, before recalling the significant impact of the Kingdom’s commitment to dialogue and peaceful coexistence among religions.
In Dakhla, The American delegation held talks with local officials and elected representatives of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region, as well as with the Director General of the Regional Investment Center, who all highlighted the development that the region is witnessing in various fields, as well as the advantages that it offers to investors and economic operators. The US Delegation also visited Dakhla Atlantic Port construction site, which aims to become a major maritime hub in Africa, connecting the continent to international markets.
In this regard, the members of the US delegation underlined, in declarations to the press, that they have been impressed by the quality of projects, contributing to enhance the human development indicators.
In the same vein, the WINEP Executive Director expressed his "willingness to cooperate with the Kingdom of Morocco, with a view of supporting local actors in developing the region and taking advantage of its economic potential". For her part, The Soref Fellow and WINEP director of the Junior Research Program, Sabina Henneberg noted that the Dakhla Atlantic port "stands out as a promising project expected to attract significant international investments".
In Essaouira, the WINEP delegation has been received by the Advisor of His Majesty the King and the President of Essaouira-Mogador Association, Mr. André Azoulay. This meeting focused on the relevance of Morocco’s strategic choices that made of it of a “well respected and listened to country” on the international scene.
At the start of the visit, a reception has been organized by the Secretary General of the Council of Jewish Communities of Morocco, Serge Berdugo, in honor of the members of the WINEP delegation. Satloff highlighted, in this event, the key role of Morocco internationally, standing out as “the voice of moderation and wisdom”.
