UK Backs Morocco's Autonomy Plan for Sahara

Ambassador Amrani's full statement following the Joint Communiqué issued today in Rabat.
The communique further emphasises that « both countries support, and consider vital, the central role of the UN-led process». As a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council, the United Kingdom agrees with Morocco on the urgent need to find a resolution to this long-held dispute, which would be in the interest of the parties.
Such a position leaves no doubt as to the credibility of the autonomy initiative and the strong international consensus supporting it. Indeed, from the milestone US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Saharan provinces in 2020, to the strong stances expressed from Spain and France, there is today a growing coalition of countries, across all Continents, supporting the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the only solution possible to this dispute.
The UK’s position opens new perspectives for investment in Morocco’s Southern Provinces, notably through #UKExport Finance’s £5 billion commitment to support new business across the country. This reflects the recognition of Morocco as a key gateway to Africa’s socio-economic development.
